Fall 12 look book inspiration

As the Fall12 look book photo shoot approaches, I'm starting to gather inspiration to give to my photog/graphic artist, Jessica Comingore. This is the first time she will be doing BOTH the photography and look book layout and I can't wait to see her vision behind the lens.

I didn't have to think hard about it, obviously Kate, Rachel, Alexa were on the list, but then I realized that I have a huge crush on Diane Kruger! I think she always looks flawless, and she has mastered the art of mixing girly with edgy.

2011 was a year of growth, patience and expanding myself in ways I didn't know I could. I cannot believe how much I have learned in 12 months. From my first import, writing me first invoice, my first shipment, lifestyle video, press, trunk show, production, factory visit, showroom, and retail delivery plus many more...
To think back at where I was a year from today, I have so much to be thankful for AND so much to look forward too! If next year is anything like last, then it will be a helluva ride and I can't wait!!

the Haute Look process

The Haute Look sale ended this last Monday and today I'm delivering the goods to the warehouse.

The process of a weekend sale actually takes about a month to coordinate. First I send samples and inventory, this happened in the beginning of November. they have many meetings to discuss and then get me the final selection. Then I'll freeze my inventory. When the sale is over, I receive a PO from Haute Look of everything that sold during the sale. I then label, and pack up each style in their respected boxes, which are also labeled. The process is a tedious one but worth it! Now in order to save money on shipping, I'm delivering the good myself. Ha! bet they have never had a Prius pull up to the loading dock before!

tonight, I'm celebrating with my boo. Wine and The Help! Has anyone seen it? Was it as good as the book?!

Wow, words cannot even express to you how well the Spring 12 video shoot went this last Saturday. The early morning clouds opened up, we shot all outfits needed, finished 1/2 hour early and we had a BLAST doing it. It's amazing the magic that can happen when everyone is synced creatively. A GIGANTIC thanks again to the videographer, Austin Hendrix, the gorgeouso model, Alexis Roohani and the Set-design/photographer/right hand woman, Jenika Kurtz. I can't wait to see the finished product!

Pendelton is one of the oldest clothing manufacturers in the United States. Still a family owned business (which you don't see very often today), they started the wool company in Pendelton Oregon. Fast forward over a 100 years and they have successfully reinvented themselves again! With the new Portland Collection (So Cute) as well as a collaboration with Opening Ceremony, this company is showing no signs of slowing down. Inspirational really.

The Big Easy

I always knew that New Orleans had some amazing history, good music and fried food, but nothing could've prepared me for the experience I had this last weekend traveling to the Big Easy with my husband and two of our closest friends. The entire city has this very mystical vibration, and the FOOD, oh. my. god. I enthusiastically gained 5 pounds :)
But the biggest surprise to me was the inspiration that I would get from this beautiful city. The vibrant colors, detailing and patterns that are naturally ingrained definitely get me in the mood to start sketching Fall 12' this week. I dreamt of colbalt blue and brocade last night...

Diane of Fürstenberg is synonymous with bold prints, effortless style and women empowerment. She started designing women's clothing in 1970 with only a $30,000 investment, finally making her mark with the wrap dress in 1973. She became a contributing editor for Vanity Fair magazine and holds the president chair for the CFDA (and lifetime achievement award). But what most people don't know is that she avoided bankruptcy in the early 90's by selling most of her licensees. Moral of the story: DON'T QUIT!!
She is definitely one of my idols and I am buying her autobiography today!! Has anyone read it?

"Dress for Success" fashion show

I'm thrilled to announce that I will participate in a charity runway show honoring "Dress for Success" next Wednesday at the Hotel Solamar downtown. "Dress for Success" is a non-profit charity dedicated to improving the lives of women worldwide by helping them into the workforce. They do this by providing professional clothing, employment retention programs and ongoing support.

Last Thursday we headed up to Los Angeles to shoot the Spring 12 collection. We used my showroom at the Cooper Building as the location, and the industrial, raw feeling it provided was perfect! and I really couldn't be happier with the team I had! there was such an amazing dynamic between all of us, that I'm sure it was captured in the photos. How do you know...

I have been struggling with one of my factories now for the last couple months. It is obvious with the lack of communication and the lack of efficiency that they no longer want to work with my company. While this pains me, I understand the reasons behind it. Working with a smaller company takes a lot of upfront investment with very little return in the beginning, and juggling a smaller company with your much larger clientele, it is no surprise that the smaller one will loose attention.
My problem is that I LOVE her work, prices, and the fact that she has been with me since the beginning, she helped me start this company!
Now my question is, should I fight for it, or continue to struggle with the "partnership" and perhaps damage the business? How do you know when to cut ties?

p.s I know I'm really behind on this, but I'm loving Pintrest!! (this photo says it all)

I'm a watch kind of gal. Recently, I have been coveting after a leather band watch. I quickly realized after scouring Fashion Valley mall, that I have very specific taste. My dream watch just wasn't out on the shelves. Then my brilliant husband came up with the idea to simply switch the band on my favorite men's Seiko watch that I have been wearing faithfully for three years. I recently watched (for the 2nd time) the biography on Coco Chanel, "Coco before Chanel" which starts out at her childhood when she was abandoned by her father and left at an orphanage. It trails along her life showing how it all began. She was classy, independent, self reliant and tough as nails! a great inspiration.

I found these sketches drawn by friend and predecessor at Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld. I'm thinking about blowing one up to hang in my office.

Check out this beautiful photo of the twin moguls. Do you think this was planned? The beautiful chartreuse couch (loving this color right now) against the eggplant wall with the accent of her teal sari and dark gold metallic jacket. It takes my breath away. I read "The Power of Positive Thinking" eight years ago and it completely changed my life. It introduced me to law of attraction well before I got a hold of "The Secret", thus catapulting me into the direction of my fate. seriously.
I decided to pick up "The Power of Positive Thinking" again to remind myself of the basic principals. I had completely forgotten about the obvious religious tone of the book, but nevertheless, it teaches the same basic fundamentals of asking for and receiving the life that you want.

I was watching my new favorite show the other day, Million Dollar Decorators and Mary McDonald ( my favorite character) had painted a client's floor a striking black and white zigzag. At first I had the same reaction as the client~ shock! but then I soon started to LOVE the concept. What do you guys think? Paint, or no paint?

Yesterday, I spent the last 5 hours of the "work day" reaching out to editors of various magazines in San Diego, Orange County, Palm Springs and Los Angeles. There are a few online publications that I can't seem to find any contact information on i.e High Gloss! I'm sure these editors are inundated with product suggestions, but they sure do make it hard to send them free stuff :)
Until I have the budget for PR, then in the trenches I will remain. But I just have to ask, does anyone have any suggestions on finding an editor contact that is not published?
Also, I finally ordered some personalize stationary from Rock Paper Scissors. Isn't it cute?

OH! and before I forget, just listened to the most amazing broadcast of Ali Brown's secrets to obtaining your higher power and higher consciousness, all the while finding success with ease and grace. If you have an hour I suggest listening here

I thought I would share with you one of the embroidery layouts that I did for Spring 12. This is one of the less complicated ones, but there is still quite a bit that goes into laying out embroidery, or any embellishment for that matter. It's important to be really clear on placement, measurements, color and quality. For my Spring 12 collection, 8 out of the 31 styles put into work have some sort of embroidery or embellishment detail.
FYI this embroidery is going to be tonal- the yellow is a highlighter just showing contrast.

Next time, take a look at the detailing of that style you're wearing and think about all the design meetings and hours of layouts that it may have taken. crazy. It reminds me of that scene from the "Devil Wears Prada", when Meryl Streep's character is talking about the cerulean sweater. ha! so true.and how much do you love that movie?

p.s I'm challenging myself to a new blog routine starting next Monday. I'm hoping for Mon, Wed, Friday and thrilled to meet up with my friend Brandi to discuss a new blog layout. exciting!!!

Spring 12

I'm over half way done with my tech packs for Spring 2012 development! Only have 13 more to send out before Wednesday... and I keep reminding myself that I can do it ( like the little engine that could :) I am developing 10 more styles than I have for the last two seasons for a total of 30. Additionally, I will add in a very small "summer" capsule to keep things fresh.
My inspiration for next Spring is derived from a trip to Costa Rica that we took earlier this year. Bright bold colors, tons of embroidery and flowy silhouettes. ahh to be honest it's making me want to book another vacation NOW! which in turn only makes me work harder...crazy logic huh? I'm also using a lot more natural fibers like silk and cotton, which I'm thrilled about!! ~ stay tuned.

You may have heard me talk about my super friend Jenika. She has this amazing house with her boyfriend Robert that has been featured in apartment therapy a bunch of times. I love her blog because she regularly posts easy DIY projects for the interior-designed challenged. This one in particular really got my creative juices flowing. A headboard can completely change the look of the room, especially when you use a bold, vibrant print like she did! She makes it look so effortless.

If you're reading this head board, watch out! because I'm going to transform you one of these weekends!

What are you guys doing for the Memorial weekend? We are going camping with our buddies up at Thomas mountain. Should be coooold, but perfect campfire and smore weather!!

Most importantly though, I'm thankful today for living in the country that I do and for all the servicemembers who fight everyday to protect our freedom. It's really amazing to think that I'm able to go after all of my dream(s)...and with no limitations. Anything is possible.
So America, you're the bees-knees. thank you.

Just a quick update: the photo shoot on Wednesday with San Diego Rivieria magazine went great! Melissa, the photographer, was brilliant! She was so patient with my awkward, non-model self that she put me at ease very quickly.

Oh!and a big hello to all my new followers...you guys are awesome.

I'm starting the day on a {glamorous} one. I have a photo shoot with Orange County's prestigious lifestyle magazine, Rivieria this morning. I'm thrilled!! We are shooting at my Los Angeles showroom, Shayna Masino Sales since my "studio" aka second bedroom, is under a foot of Spring 12 fabric swatches and sketches right now. I'll update tomorrow :)

Today marks the one year birthday for my blog! I was thinking about it yesterday and it's really unbelievable how much this blog has helped me to grow both personally and professionally.
The friendships that I have made are invaluable, and I can't imagine being where I am today with out the support from all of you! It really has helped me continue on in times of darkness. I can't thank you enough.

Some excited news last week, the kendall k. lace "betti' shorts were featured in the June issue of People Style Watch. Five days later, I think it has finally has settled in :) I wanted to wait a few days to post this because of all the mentioning I did on face book and twitter.

But this got me to thinking...what is the proper way to utilize each media outlet with out sounding redundant?

I once heard someone say, use your face book account for friends, linkedin for professionals, twitter for the people you want to network with and the blog for inspiration.
But with all these social media outlets, the line becomes blurry at times and/or the people that are connected in all areas are bombarded with your posts.Please tell me, how do you guys differentiate your outgoing news? and does it bother you to hear the same thing on different outlets?

Balenciaga and San Francisco

How cool is that cake??!

Right, how perfect are those words together?! This last Sunday was my birthday, and my darling hubby decided to surprise me with a trip to see our very dear friends up in S.F! We had an amazing time, even adding in a little work, visiting the charming boutique Bryan Lee. {kendall k. will be there in the fall}
The weekend was full of laughter, yahtzee, real german food, red velvet cake to die for, farmer's market, alameda flea market and a museum visit to see the Balenciaga exhibit at the de Young. It was the perfect thing to get my creative juices flowing... seriously. awe. inspiring.

Now that fall production orders are in, I can concentrate on selling though inventory and sketching next Spring. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

I have been tirelessly working on the fall production orders for all of today and most of last week. There is so much detail that goes into a production order; quantities, care and main label placements/info, garment specs, fabric and trim details and size ratios OH MY~these babies require a lot of attention!
I have also been thinking a lot about what a successful business model would be for continuous growth in terms of ordering units. What's your opinion, should I order on the smaller side so that I'm confident it will sell through OR order more than last time with the hopes of growth?
...sort of feels like I'm gambling :)

a single man

Seeing as though the hubs is out of town, I thought it was an appropriate time to watch Tom Ford's " A Single Man". I thought it was perfect. Deep thoughts of existentialism and human relationships blended perfectly with great acting and suburb set design. This movie left me with an eerie feeling. If you haven't seen it, please beware~ I love dark, tormented movies. If you have seen it, I would love to hear your thoughts!
How great is that house? p.s It’s known as the Schaffer Residence, built by architect John Lautner in 1949 for the mother of one of his employees. It is located in the Montrose area of Glendale and in Jan 2011 it was on the market for $1.495 million.

a social weekend followed by a busy week

My horoscope said I was going to be especially busy this month and so far it hasn't disappointed. (p.s if you enjoy reading astrology, check out susanmiller.com ~ she's amazing.)
It was a weekend full of live music, delicious home made Mexican food and a charming outdoor baby shower!
It was a perfect weekend before the crazy week I have ahead. I'm shipping out my orders to Market boutique in Corpus Cristie, Texas and the Red Balloon in Newport Beach. Also, I'm getting ready to place my fall production orders, which means that I need to spec ( or measure) all the garments and start putting together the extensive purchase orders. Additionally, I'm working on getting my online shop up and running (next day or two) and start sketching for next Spring. Hope everyone has a productive week.

This is sort of how I feel, I just need to swim to the other side..

Yesterday was my bestie's birthday! To celebrate her 31st we headed out to Glen Ivy Spa in Corona. It was a perfect day of massages, mud, soaking in the sun and laughter. It also reminded me how important it is to take time for yourself; relax and recharge the batteries. We are only human.
I hope you get to treat yourselves today, whether it is a hot bath, taking a nap or just eating a little slower. We all deserve it.

los angeles textile show

Yesterday I attended the LA textile show in downtown Los Angeles. Perfect timing as next week I will start emptying my head of all the Spring 2012 ideas whirling around inside. I'm feeling as though our last trip to Costa Rica will be a great inspiration for this collection and in fact, I bought my first print artwork!! For those of you who don't know, you can buy one of a kind artwork to develop into fabric~ which then will be exclusive to you. Whoa, let me just tell you how hard of a decision that was. I used to pick out prints for BCBG and Arden B all the time, but when its your own $$ and brand its a whole new ballpark. I'm totally happy with my decision and excited about the beautiful poppy, chartreuse and teal color story that will become of it.

While flipping through the channels this last weekend, I stumbled upon a documentary on Annie Leibovitz. Up until that point, I really didn't know a whole lot about Annie except that she was an amazing photographer. I soon found out that she has shot EVERYONE! From her rock n' roll days at The Rolling Stones, to movie stars and politician at Vanity Fair to high fashion at Vogue, her resume is long yet her ego remains low. If you get a chance, I highly recommend seeing this documentary, "Annie Leibovitz: Life through a Lens". It's inspirational.

So I'm taking off today for the desert to do a whirlwind of three radio interviews. One today at 3:00 on 94.3 the Joey English Show, one tomorrow morning, Dan McGrath will interview me on 103.1 fm and another on Monday afternoon- Lee Rayburn show on 94.3 knews fm. Additionally, I will be featured on KMIR news, the local, big-time news station in the desert!! I feel so glamorous being shuffled from one interview to another.

I'm promoting my trunk show at Tink boutique on El Paseo next Thursday from 2-6! Also next week is fashion week on El Paseo, which reminds me I still need to buy my tickets. I feel like it's full-circle, going back to the town where it all began...

I am a huge Depeche Mode fan, HUGE. So of course when I saw this photo of Dave Gahan my heart skipped a beat. New York times did a great job on portraying the "Godfathers of Glam". A few more notable mentions, Iggy Pop and David Johanson from the New York Dolls. Although some of them look like they have been through the ringer, they probably have some crazy stories to tell...

I just put together the flower arrangements for the party tomorrow and can I just tell you friends two things:
1.) It is SOOO much cheaper to arrange yourselves, especially if you buy at Trader Joe's. Helpful hint: go early to get the best picks~ flowers are delivered daily!
2.) I found it to be quite soothing.
My favorite flowers are peonies. Now tell me, what are some of your favs??

Just finishing up the last minute touches for the kendall k. launch party and trunk show this Saturday at Kyss boutique in Carlsbad!! I'm now over my fear and just super excited. I'm a shipping machine

Woah, so last week was a bit nuts...but in a good way of course! I shipped out 90% of my orders, dropped my fall collection off at my showroom, finalized the look book and made (serious) contact with a NY showroom. I'm shipping off a few pieces for them to review so wish me luck...if picked up, my pieces could be sitting pretty next to Yuma Kim and Isabella Lu!

Sad to say, I have only seen Natalie's Oscar performance out the winners last night, but I must run out a see The King's Speech immediately..( or more realistically, wait for it to come out on redbox or netflix ). Receiving um-teen amount of awards last night, it was an Oscar prince.

and don't forget to watch Oprah today, when she takes over the Oscar stage for her "Ultimate After Oscar Party"...can't wait!

So those of you who are friends with me on facebook may have seen that I received my Spring shipment yesterday night, 8:56 pm to be exact. February 23rd has now been inducted into the 10 all time favorite days of my life. I even teared up a little when I saw my name on the box.
I'm thinking I'm going to put these photos in a frame so I can always remember that feeling.

The March issue of Vanity Fair really got my attention. Look how gorgeous Anne looks draped in silver satin with red lips. hmm ...not to mention the...er...um dapper young things surrounding her. Perfect homage to old Hollywood glamor. In my opinion, it's exactly how Oscar contenders should be portrayed.
